We offer a bearing inspection service to evaluate current performance and residual function. From this we provide a full evidential report making recommendations where necessary.
During inspection there are key observations and measurements that can be interpreted by the experienced eye and be made without dismantling. In this work there are valuable safety and conservation issues.
Reports will be forwarded within 10 working days from the inspection date with photographs; typical or specific, for record or action. Bearings will be identified and all available data recorded e.g. type, size and any visible markings.
This service can embrace a number of structures on a rolling program or is available on a day to day basis. In many cases where access is simple, several bridges may be viewed in one day.
We offer site maintenance that includes servicing, cleaning and coating repairs.
Most structural bearings fail through contamination, but it is important to note any cleaning must be with care and an understanding of the sensitive surfaces. These can easily be damaged.
The worst case of contamination discovered during inspection was an 8.8 M20 bolt, rolled flat by a viaduct roller bearing carrying a major Highway. The worst case of poor cleaning we have seen to date is 300 bearings shot blasted including the mirror polished sliding surfaces!
The use of cleaning materials, solvents and their application is crucial to improving function. The work requires specialised skills.
We know that service must deliver solutions on or below budget. Where the replacement of bearings often has a six or seven figure consequence, early maintenance is prudent and maintenance costs well spent.
We find that the major cause of failure is rarely connected with load and movement, but in the deterioration of protective coatings, leading to crevice corrosion and the distortion and seizure of stainless surfaces.

Facts
Many old bridges have existing bearings that are changed due to high friction or seizure at sliding surfaces. Often otherwise sound, many bearings can be restored in situ and lubricated by fitting an automatic timed discharge grease capsule.
